I will not pretend to have solved the mystery of hell. Just as we cannot possibly envision the new heavens and earth, neither can we fully envision hell, whatever it is. But the truth is, the Word does give us the broad contours, enough to say with confidence that hell is NOT the caricature that we’ve been told.
For most Christians today, ‘the heavens’ that God created includes the vast emptiness of space — of stars, galaxies, quasars, black holes, etc, of which the Genesis account offers only the briefest of accounts. But is ‘space’ – how it’s commonly understood now – what Genesis is referring to by ‘the heavens?’ Do you want to hear a secret?
